"In March of 2020 my ex-girlfriend and I were still living together, riding out the lease. I had turned our office/music room into my new dwelling where I spent almost all of my time. Covid had just hit and I was “sheltering in place” and unemployed. When I wasn’t sleeping, drinking, or doing other things to distract myself from the strange and unpleasant reality I was in, I was left to actually think about it. “Flood” is about this time in my life. It’s about the ways we can deceive ourselves when we try to escape or hide from our reality. It’s about the things I’d done and not done that led me to that situation. And it’s about how I was still spending a lot of energy to uphold a fiction that I would wake up in the life I wanted if I kept going this way."
- John Nicholls on writing "Flood"
lyrics
The sun shined through my room today
Speckled on my face
It’s good to feel the warmth on me
And I don’t have a thing to do
Sleep the week away
Cold gives way to longer days
And I could meet you in the dark
I’ve got lots of time
To resurrect some light
To be see through
You’ll pack your things while I’m away
And be gone without a trace
It was good to have this time with you
It doesn’t mean a thing unless you want it to
Feel nothing forever
A stream of images bleed endlessly to me
The flood
And I don’t care to soak the bruise
Spent half the afternoon
Puzzle piecing shadowed walls
Until they’re swallowed up again
As the night sets in
Another day black and blue
And I like hiding in a dream
I like messing up my world
I like playing make believe
I like dying just for fun
It doesn’t mean a thing unless you want it to
Feel nothing forever
And I sink deep so I can’t feel the weight always
